# Size Measurement Guide: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Whether you're getting a new garage door or need replacement panels, accurate measurements are essential. This guide will help you measure your garage door opening correctly.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

A door that's too small leaves gaps that compromise security and insulation. A door that's too large simply won't fit. Getting the measurements right the first time saves money, time, and frustration.

Tools You'll Need, Tape measure (25ft minimum)

- Step ladder, Paper and pencil, Level (optional but helpful)

The Essential Measurements

1. Width of Opening

Measure the width of the opening at floor level, from one side of the opening to the other. Measure at the widest point.

Standard widths: 8', 9', 10', 12', 14', 16', 18'

2. Height of Opening

Measure from the floor to the top of the opening (the header). Measure at both sides to check for level.

Standard heights: 7', 8'

3. Side Room (Left and Right)

Measure from the edge of the opening to the nearest obstruction on each side. This space is needed for vertical tracks.

Minimum required: 3.75" on each side (more for some openers)

4. Headroom

Measure from the top of the opening to the ceiling or lowest obstruction.

Minimum required: - Standard: 10" - Low headroom: 6" - Torsion springs: 12"

5. Backroom (Depth)

Measure from the opening to the back of the garage. The door needs space to fully open.

Minimum required: Door height + 18"

Recording Your Measurements

Create a simple sketch of your garage opening and note:

- Width: _____ inches, Height: _____ inches, Left side room: _____ inches, Right side room: _____ inches, Headroom: _____ inches, Backroom: _____ feet

Special Considerations

Uneven Floors

If your garage floor isn't level, measure the height at multiple points and note the variance.

Existing Door Removal

If replacing an existing door, measure both the door and the opening. They may differ slightly.

Obstructions

Note any lights, pipes, HVAC ducts, or other items that might affect new door installation.

When to Call a Professional

While DIY measuring is possible, a professional measurement ensures accuracy and considers factors you might miss:

- Spring system requirements - Opener compatibility, Track configurations, Local building codes
